Anthropology is copying my style!

the day after i completed my DIY scented candles, Christmas Eve to be exact, i ran out to do some very last minute shopping at Anthropology, and look what I saw! these scented candles where $28 and were practically identical to what i made. :)

DIY Scented Jar Candles

*sorry for the delay on posting this project and not having a picture of the finished candles! I completely forgot to take a picture and then gave them away as gifts.

Materials you will need:

-a jar/glass (the two jars i used were aprox 6-8oz)

-wax (there are several different types, i had to purchase crystalizing wax flakes from Michele’s because every other type was sold out.  you can also use old wax from left over candles)

-pure essence oil (i used lavender)

-wick string (i purchased mine at Michele’s)

-wick stand (also purchased at Michele’s)

-wax dye (optional, i used florescent red for one of the candles)

-popsicle stick/chop stick to secure your wick

-glue (i used super glue, but i am pretty sure Elmers glue would do just fine)

-a pair of scissors

-a pair of pliers

-a paper clip

-medium sauce pan

-extra glass jar for melting wax

first measure the height of your jar in order to cut the appropriate amount of string.

since the jar was 4 inches tall, i gave myself an extra 2 inches for the string

take a wick stand and place the 6 inch string through the whole of the stand, leaving aprox 1/2 inch of string coming through base of wick. close stand opening with a pair of pliers to ensure the wick does not come loose.

glue the bottom of wick stand…

… and then place it in the center of the jar’s base

to ensure that the wick stays straight throughout the wax hardening process, secure the wick to a popsicle stick and then clasp with a paper clip

take a medium size sauce pan and fill it half way with water.  bring to a boil.

place a glass jar in boiling water with non-melted wax (new or used).

stir wax until completely melted

*this is what your wax will look like when it is almost all melted

as soon as the wax is completely melted, add essential oil and wax dye (optional).  you can play around with how much oil you want in your candle.  i used around 10 drops.

remove glass jar from saucepan and slowly pour melted wax into prepared jar.  leave wax to set for 24hrs. once the wax is set cut the wick leaving approximately 3/4 inch for burning.

* my apologies for not having a better picture of the white candle in the green jar, it was definitely my favorite one.  I found the fun dot textured glasses at the Christmas Tree Shop in Somerville, MA. i was in such a hurry to get the candles wrapped up for x-mas gifts I forgot to take a lot of pictures.

Chalkboard Mug

thanks lawrence for showing me this great diy project via wit & whistle! this project came in the nick of time, right when i needed a few more gift ideas for christmas.

Materials you will need:

- porcelain mug (i purchased two large soup mugs from the Christmas Tree Shop in MA)

- chalkboard paint (purchased at Michael’s craft store)

- small paint brush

- painter’s tape

- chalk

*make sure your paint will work on a porcelin surface

place painter’s tape evenly around mug and handle in order to paint a straight line.

my first attempt did not yield a straight line.  you may need to even out the line with your paintbrush or finger.  i actually used my finger nail to push down the paint when it was still dry.

allow paint to dry for 24 hrs.

once the paint is fully set, you can have fun with writing with the chalk.  i gave the matching mugs to my aunt, Nancy & uncle, Neil. I tied up a few pieces of chalk for each mug and placed them inside.
